FIELD will host a Discourse Lab around the themes of: simultaneity, zeitgeist, identity and urban space.
Against the background of their own artistic and urban anthropological work, the discourse participants will discuss topics raised by the exhibition project “Time of Distance” (which is taking place simultaneously in Berlin and Helsinki).
The compression of time and space, caused by the rapid development of transportation and communication pathways at the beginning of the 21st century, has brought forth a new quality of relationships, interconnections and moral concepts. Material and virtual mobility allows distant cities to move closer together and cause urban life to become increasingly similar. Following the end of the Cold War, transnational migration has become a normality again and is joined by trans-cultural mobility.
Christine Nippe studied European Ethnology and cultural science at Humboldt University in Berlin, as well as business economics at the Freie Universität Berlin. At the moment the urban anthropologist and art theorist works as a freelance curatorial assistant for the 5th Berlin Biennale. She is currently writing her dissertation on the theme of 'Art and the City - Visual Artists in New York und Berlin: about the Symbolic Capital of the Metropolis'.
Morten Dysgaard's featured work in the exhibition is his film Spiral of gazes. His films ask pertinent questions about social conventions and in doing so, bends these norms. His work deals with the process of self perception which arises when one is being confronted with and reflected by a foreign identity. He has exhibited internationally in a wide range of museums, galeries and festivals such as Malmö Konsthall, Malmö, Schweden (2004), im Kunstforeningen Gl. Strand, Dänemark (2006) und bei The Lab, San Francisco, USA (2007).
Laura Horelli is showing her sound collage Kolminkertaiset ikkunat (Triple Window) - a collaboration with Anu Pennanen. In 2007 she was an artist in residency at Villa Aurora, Los Angeles, where she exhibited: Virtuosic Siblings: Berlin / LA Festival of Film / Art, Red Cat, Goethe Institute, Villa Aurora, Los Angeles. Further selected exhibitions include: L´Europe en devenir, Centre Culturel Suisse, Paris (2007), Altenburg: Provinz in Europa, Eine künstlerische und kulturtopographische Anthologie, Lindenau-Museum, Altenburg (2007), „I have been considering making a video about a ski resort in Northern Finland and showing it in Galerie Barbara Weiss", Berlin (2007), Darkroom, Turku Art Museum, Finnland (2008).
